A lighting scene is a stored combination of levels across separately controlled circuits, recalled from a single button — Entertain, Dine, Relax — instead of a wall of individual dimmers. Scenes are only as good as the circuiting and zoning beneath them, which is wiring decided at drawing stage, and they are finished not at handover but at a walk-through commissioning visit once the home is furnished and lived in.

A well-designed prime home carries several layers of light in every principal room: architectural downlights, joinery and shelf lighting, cove details, art accents, decorative pendants and lamps. Without scenes, that richness collapses into a bank of dimmer plates nobody touches after the first week. With scenes, the whole composition changes character at one press. This guide explains what scenes actually are, why the wiring beneath them matters more than the technology, and how to avoid the mistakes that make sophisticated systems feel complicated.
What a scene actually is
A scene is nothing more mysterious than a stored recipe: circuit one at 80 per cent, circuit two at 30, circuit three off, recalled together from a keypad button, an app or a schedule. The intelligence is not in the button — it is in the decisions about which circuits exist, what each one controls, and what levels make the room feel right at seven in the evening as opposed to seven in the morning. Scenes are also editable software: the recipe can be rewritten in minutes, years after handover.
Circuits and zones: the foundation
A scene can only control what has been wired separately. The governing principle is to circuit by function and by surface: task downlights on one circuit, joinery and shelf lighting on another, cove details on their own, art accents on their own, decorative pendants and 5-amp lamp sockets on theirs. In open-plan spaces, add zoning — kitchen, dining and sitting areas each carrying their own set of circuits — so one large room can hold several moods at once, with supper lit warmly while the kitchen behind it goes quiet.
Typical scene sets, room by room
Most rooms settle on three to five scenes. More than that and buttons stop being pressed. Typical sets:
- Kitchen-living: Entertain, Dine, Relax and Clean-up — the canonical set for open-plan space, detailed in the table below.
- Principal bedroom: Morning (bright, functional), Evening (low, warm, lamps leading), Night (a minimal path to the bathroom).
- Entrance hall: Day, Evening and a Welcome scene the arrival keypad or schedule triggers as the front door is used after dark.
- Bathrooms: Day (full mirror and general light), Evening (softer), Night (very low, warm, safe at three in the morning).
- Media or cinema room: Watch, Pause and Tidy — the last one bright enough to find things.
Dim-to-warm for the evening
Dim-to-warm sources shift colour temperature as they dim — typically from around 2700 K at full output down towards 1800–2200 K at low level — mimicking the way incandescent lamps glowed warmer as they faded. In evening scenes this is transformative: Relax at 20 per cent feels like candlelight rather than a dimmed office. Use it consistently within a sightline; a dim-to-warm cove beside a fixed-white downlight circuit produces a mismatch every evening scene will expose.
Joinery, cove and art layers in scenes
The layers built into the architecture are what give scenes their range. Shelf and joinery details in LED strip, cove uplighting and art accents each read as a distinct plane of light, and a scene is really a statement about which plane leads. Entertain lets joinery and art carry the room; Dine hands it to the pendant over the table; Relax sinks everything to a warm low horizontal register. If those layers all share one circuit, none of this is possible — which is why the layering and the circuiting must be designed together.
Keypads or apps
Keypads win daily use: a fixed, engraved button beside the door works for guests, children and anyone in the dark, with no phone and no menu. Apps earn their place for occasional edits, schedules and use away from home. The best practice is both — keypads for living, the app for adjusting — with keypad discipline observed: few buttons, engraved plainly (Entertain, Dine, Relax, Off), consistent from room to room.
Commissioning and the walk-through
Scene levels set at practical completion are educated guesses: the rooms are empty, the walls bare and nobody has cooked a meal. The system is genuinely finished at a walk-through visit after the home is furnished and occupied — moving room by room in the evening, adjusting levels, fade times and button assignments against real life. Planning for that visit, and choosing a dimming protocol that dims smoothly to low levels without flicker, is as much a part of the specification as the fittings themselves.
Common mistakes
- Too many scenes — ten options per room guarantees three get used. Start with three to five and add only what is missed.
- Uncontrolled colour mixing — dim-to-warm circuits beside fixed-white circuits in the same sightline, so evening scenes reveal two different whites.
- No night path — no low-level, warm route from bedroom to bathroom or kitchen that lights without waking anyone.
- Decorative fittings lumped onto architectural circuits, so lamps cannot glow while downlights rest.
- Cryptic keypad engraving — Scene 1 to Scene 4 tells a guest nothing; Entertain, Dine, Relax and Off tell them everything.
- No whole-house Off — a single goodnight press at the bedside or front door is the feature owners come to value most.

Frequently asked questions
How many lighting scenes should a room have?
Three to five. Fewer feels limiting; more go unused. The reliable core is a bright functional scene, one or two social scenes and a low evening scene, plus Off. Additional scenes are best added after living in the house, not before.
Do I need a whole-home control system to have scenes?
No. Single-room scene plates can run a kitchen-living space on its own. A whole-home system earns its cost in larger houses and open plans — shared scenes, schedules, an all-off — but the circuiting principles are identical either way.
Can scenes be changed after handover?
Yes — scenes are stored settings, and adjusting them is routine. What cannot be changed cheaply is the circuiting beneath them, which is fixed at first fix. A walk-through adjustment visit after moving in should be assumed in the programme.
What is a night path?
A very low, warm-toned lighting route — often a skirting or step detail plus a low bathroom level — recalled from a bedside button or a sensor, letting someone move through the house at night without triggering full lighting or waking others.
