Dimming Protocols: Phase, 1-10V, DALI and Wireless Compared

Dimming protocols fall into three broad families: mains phase dimming (leading or trailing edge) that chops the supply waveform, analogue 1-10V control, and digital addressable systems led by DALI and DALI-2. Phase dimming needs no control wiring but depends entirely on dimmer-driver compatibility; DALI offers per-fitting addressing, scenes and tunable white via DT8 at the cost of a control bus and commissioning. The protocol, driver and dimmer must be specified together as one decision — mismatches cause flicker, pop-on and dead travel.

More lighting schemes are undermined by dimming than by any choice of fitting. Flicker at low level, lamps that refuse to dim below 20 per cent, circuits that pop on with a jolt — nearly all of it traces to a mismatch between the dimmer, the driver and the protocol connecting them. This guide sets out the main protocols in use in London residential and hospitality work, their strengths and failure modes, and why the control decision must be made alongside the fitting specification, not after it.

Mains phase dimming: leading and trailing edge

Phase dimming is the oldest approach and the only one that needs no extra wiring: the dimmer chops a slice out of each half-cycle of the mains waveform, and the fitting receives less energy. Leading-edge dimmers cut the front of the waveform; they were designed for incandescent and magnetic transformer loads and are robust with them, but their abrupt switching sits badly with electronic LED drivers. Trailing-edge dimmers cut the tail of the waveform, switch gently, and are the default for dimmable LED. Many modern dimmers are universal and select a mode per channel — but the mode must still be set correctly at commissioning.

The pitfalls with LED are well known. Minimum load: many phase dimmers were designed around hundreds of watts of incandescent and misbehave below a threshold that a couple of LED fittings may not reach, causing instability or failure to switch off cleanly. Flicker: a driver that cannot interpret the chopped waveform smoothly will modulate its output visibly, especially at low levels. Pop-on: circuits that cannot start at a low dimmed level and instead flash to full before settling. Dead travel: whole sections of the dimmer slider producing no change. Buzzing from fitting or dimmer plate is a further symptom of a marginal pairing. None of these are defects of one product in isolation — they are compatibility failures, which is why credible manufacturers publish tested dimmer-driver compatibility matrices and why sampling the exact combination before ordering is standard practice on serious projects.

1-10V: the analogue legacy

1-10V control separates power from control for the first time: the fitting is powered permanently and a two-wire analogue signal tells the driver what level to hold, from 10 V (full) down to 1 V (minimum), with switching handled separately. It is simple, robust and still found in commercial refurbishments and some amenity applications. Its limits are equally plain: one control pair per circuit means granularity stops at circuit level, there is no addressing, no status feedback, no scenes intelligence in the protocol itself, and polarity-sensitive control wiring must be installed alongside power. In new work it survives mainly as a fallback where an existing installation is being extended; new schemes reach instead for DALI or wireless.

DALI and DALI-2

DALI — the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface, standardised as IEC 62386 — replaces the analogue signal with a digital bus: a polarity-free two-wire pair connecting up to 64 addressable drivers per line. Each driver can be commanded individually (addressed), in one of 16 groups, or all together (broadcast); 16 scene levels can be stored in the drivers themselves and recalled with a single command. Because grouping is logical rather than electrical, circuits can be re-zoned in software without rewiring — a decisive advantage in residential work where furniture plans and joinery evolve late. Dimming is smooth to very low levels with quality drivers, and the protocol reports lamp and driver failures back to the controller.

DALI-2 is the current, more tightly certified generation: it extends the standard to input devices and application controllers, improves interoperability between manufacturers, and underpins device type 8 (DT8), the profile through which a single address controls tunable white or colour as one fitting rather than as separate channels. For any scheme contemplating dim-to-warm behaviour by tunable means, or genuine tunable white, DT8 support in both driver and control system should be stated explicitly. The costs of DALI are the control bus itself — a wiring topology to design and install — and commissioning: addresses, groups and scenes must be programmed, and reprogrammed when the design intent changes.

Wireless ecosystems

A growing share of projects, particularly retrofits where new control wiring is impractical, use wireless or hybrid control. Systems commonly encountered in London work include Casambi, Lutron and KNX-based installations, each with its own ecosystem of compatible drivers, keypads and commissioning tools. Speaking generally rather than of any one brand: wireless removes control wiring but not the compatibility question — the driver must still speak the ecosystem's language natively or through a certified interface, network design still matters in dense buildings, and the scheme still needs commissioning. Hybrid architectures are common, for example a wired DALI backbone with wireless keypads and sensors. The evaluation criteria are the same as for wired protocols: granularity, scene capability, driver availability across the chosen fittings, and a clear commissioning path.

Why driver and protocol must be specified together

A luminaire is only as dimmable as its driver, and a driver only performs on the protocol it was built for. The same fitting is typically orderable with trailing-edge, DALI or ecosystem-specific driver options, and the choice changes the wiring design, the control panel schedule and the behaviour at low level — including whether the fitting can reach the 1 per cent or lower dimming depth that evening scenes in prime residential work demand. Specifying fittings first and controls later is how projects end up with the wrong driver variant on site. The fitting schedule should state the driver type and protocol for every position, and the control system should be confirmed against it line by line — the coordination work at the centre of our dimming and controls coordination service, and a discipline that begins at product specification stage.

Commissioning responsibility

Addressable and wireless systems do not work out of the box: someone must address the drivers, build the groups, set scene levels, configure fade times and prove the system room by room. On well-run projects that responsibility is named in writing — usually the controls supplier or a specialist commissioning engineer — with the electrician responsible for the bus and power wiring to a tested standard, and the lighting specifier responsible for stating intended scenes and levels. Ambiguity here is the most common source of post-completion disputes: a technically perfect installation that has never been programmed presents to the client as a broken one. Time for commissioning, and for a post-occupancy adjustment visit once furniture and art are in place, should appear in the programme from the outset.

What is the difference between leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming?

Both chop the mains waveform, but leading-edge dimmers cut the start of each half-cycle and trailing-edge dimmers cut the end. Leading edge suits incandescent and magnetic transformer loads; trailing edge switches more gently and is the default for dimmable LED drivers. Using the wrong mode is a common cause of flicker and buzzing.

Do I need DALI in a house?

Not always, but it earns its place quickly. For a flat or small refurbishment, good trailing-edge dimming on well-matched circuits can be entirely satisfactory. For whole-house schemes with scenes, multiple layers per room and tunable or dim-to-warm fittings, DALI or an equivalent addressable or wireless ecosystem gives per-fitting control and re-zoning in software rather than rewiring.

What is DALI DT8 and when does it matter?

DT8 is the DALI device type that lets one address control a tunable white or colour fitting as a single entity, rather than using separate addresses per channel. It matters whenever tunable white or colour-adjustable fittings are specified: both the drivers and the control system must support DT8, and that support should be stated explicitly in the specification.

Why do my LED lights flicker on a dimmer?

Almost always a compatibility mismatch: a leading-edge dimmer on an electronic driver, a load below the dimmer's minimum, or a driver that cannot interpret the chopped waveform smoothly. The remedy is a tested pairing — consult the manufacturer's compatibility matrix, set universal dimmers to the correct mode, and where problems persist replace either dimmer or driver with a matched combination.

Who is responsible for commissioning a DALI system?

It must be assigned explicitly — usually to the controls supplier or a specialist commissioning engineer, with the electrical contractor responsible for tested bus and power wiring and the lighting specifier providing the intended scenes and levels. If no one is named, assume it will not happen; unprogrammed systems are the most common cause of post-completion dissatisfaction.
