In a prime London home, art is often the most valuable and the most personal thing in the room — yet it is frequently lit as an afterthought, caught in the spill of a general downlight. Lighting art well is a balance between two aims that pull in opposite directions: revealing the work as vividly as possible, and protecting it from the cumulative damage that light itself causes. Both aims are manageable once a few principles are fixed early in the design.

Start with the aiming angle

The most widely used convention in gallery practice is to aim accent light at approximately 30 degrees from vertical, measured at the centre of the work. Steeper angles — light arriving nearly straight down — throw deep shadows from the frame across the canvas and exaggerate surface texture unpleasantly. Shallower angles push the beam towards the horizontal, which lights the viewer rather than the work and, on glazed pieces, reflects the source straight back into the eyes. Thirty degrees is the working compromise: modelling without frame shadow, brightness without mirror glare.

In practice, the angle fixes the fitting position. For a picture centred around 1.5 m above the floor under a 2.7 m ceiling, the ceiling fitting typically sits around 0.7 m out from the wall. Higher ceilings push the fitting further into the room — one reason the aiming geometry should be resolved on the reflected ceiling plan, not improvised on site.

Colour fidelity: CRI and R9

Colour rendering is not negotiable for art. Specify sources with CRI 90 or above, and check the R9 value — the saturated red sample — separately, because a source can post a respectable general CRI while rendering deep reds poorly. Reds and warm earth tones dominate oil painting and are exactly where economy LEDs fall short. Consistency matters as much as quality: fittings lighting adjacent works should come from the same product family and colour bin, so a white wall of pictures does not become a patchwork of subtly different whites.

Shaping the beam

Accent spots

An adjustable spot — recessed or on track — with a beam chosen to suit the size of the work is the default tool. Narrow beams of 10–20 degrees suit smaller works at normal ceiling heights; wider beams cover larger canvases. Interchangeable optics, honeycomb louvres and snoots keep the source discreet and control spill onto the surrounding wall.

Wall washing

A row of wash fittings grades light evenly down the whole wall. Individual works receive less drama, but everything on the wall is lit acceptably wherever it hangs — the right answer for collections that rotate, salon-style hangs and family walls.

Framing projectors

A framing projector uses shutters or a profiled lens to shape the beam exactly to the canvas, so the work appears to glow with no visible spill. The effect is the most refined available, but it depends on the work staying precisely where it was commissioned — rehang the picture and the projector must be re-shuttered. Reserve it for permanent, significant works.

Conservation basics

Light damage is cumulative and irreversible: fading is driven by dose — illuminance multiplied by time — and no restoration recovers a fugitive pigment. Quality LED sources emit negligible ultraviolet and far less radiant heat than the halogen sources they replaced, which removes two historic risks, but visible light itself still causes fading. Gallery practice therefore manages lux levels and exposure time, graded by material sensitivity:

Wall-washing or individual accenting

Decide wall by wall. A permanent hang of significant works justifies dedicated accents, aimed and locked. A wall whose contents change — or a corridor gallery — is better served by a wash or a track, which tolerates rehanging without an electrician. Contrast is the other variable: an accented work sitting at three to five times the brightness of its surroundings reads as deliberate and gallery-like, while higher ratios become theatrical and tiring in a domestic setting.

Fittings that hold their aim

Specify adjustable fittings with genuinely lockable aim. An accent that drifts every time the ceiling is cleaned quietly undoes the commissioning, and the owner rarely notices until the room feels wrong. Recessed adjustable downlights suit fixed hangs; track systems suit collections that evolve, since heads can be added, moved and re-aimed at will. Whichever route is taken, interchangeable optics and accessories should be available so the beam can be refined after the art is hung.

Controls and viewing scenes

Art lighting earns a circuit of its own. Once separated, it can be woven into scenes: an evening setting where ambient light falls away and the collection leads; an entertaining setting where art, joinery and decorative layers balance; a daytime setting where the accents rest entirely — which also reduces annual light exposure on sensitive works. This layering is exactly the kind of decision resolved early in concept lighting design, when circuits are still on paper and cost nothing to change.
