Guests rarely mention lighting, but they feel it within seconds of arrival — and they photograph it, review it and decide whether to return under it. In hospitality, lighting is not a building service; it is the medium through which the brand is experienced after dark. Atmosphere lives on vertical surfaces — and faces
The instinct to measure lux on the floor is the first thing to unlearn. Guests read a space through its vertical surfaces — walls, joinery, shelving, curtains — and through each other's faces. A room with modest horizontal light but well-lit walls and flattering facial light feels generous; a brightly downlit room with dark walls feels harsh and empty. Practical consequences: wash walls and features deliberately, keep hard downlight off the tops of heads at reception and tables, and let some light arrive at faces from the side and at low level — a table lamp, a backlit bar shelf, a wall wash bouncing softly back.
Restaurant tables: light the table, not the room
The defining move of restaurant lighting is contrast: a tight, warm beam onto each table with the surroundings held noticeably darker. The tabletop becomes the stage — food, glassware and hands lit crisply — while diners sit in comfortable shadow just outside the pool. Narrow-beam accents from the ceiling, aimed within a few degrees of vertical onto the table centre, do this best; low-hung pendants achieve it decoratively if their source is shielded. Glare control is absolute: at seated eye level, no diner should see a bare source anywhere in the room. Deep-recessed optics, honeycomb louvres and disciplined aiming during commissioning are what deliver it — and table positions must be fixed on the plan before the ceiling is coordinated, because a beam six hundred millimetres off a relocated table is worse than none.
The lobby: layering and the daylight transition
A lobby works across a wider brightness range than any other space in the building. In daylight it competes with the street and large glazing, so feature surfaces and the reception desk need enough light to register. After dark the same space must fall to an intimate evening register without becoming gloomy at the entrance. The answer is layering — daylight-facing washes, feature and joinery lighting, decorative fittings, desk task light — driven by scheduled scenes that step the space through morning, afternoon, evening and late-night states. The reception desk deserves particular care: soft vertical light on the faces of staff and guests, never a single downlight above the desk shadowing everyone's eyes.
Guestrooms: practicality first
Guestroom lighting is judged at midnight, by a tired stranger in an unfamiliar room. Everything must be controllable from the bed: a master off at the bedside as well as the door, individually switched reading lights that spill minimally onto the other pillow, and a discreet low-level night light for the bathroom route. In the bathroom, the mirror matters more than the ceiling — light arriving at the face from both sides of the mirror, not a downlight overhead that shadows the eyes. Keep switching self-evident; a control system a guest cannot operate in five seconds has failed, however elegant its engineering.
Colour temperature strategy
Warmth is the default register of hospitality. Food and beverage areas commonly run at 2200–2700 K, where skin tones flatter, wood and brass glow and candlelight sits naturally alongside the electric layers. Guestrooms typically sit at 2700–3000 K, warm but functional for packing and grooming. Back-of-house can run cooler for task efficiency, provided the transition is invisible to guests. The strategic rule is consistency within any one sightline: a 2200 K dining room read against a 3000 K corridor through an open door undoes both.
Dimming curves and warm-dim in dining
Dinner service happens at the bottom of the dimming range, which is exactly where poor LED systems flicker, step and drop out. Specify sources and drivers proven to dim smoothly to very low levels, and have the dimming curves tuned at commissioning so the scene levels feel evenly spaced rather than collapsing in the last ten per cent. Warm-dim sources — shifting towards 1800–2200 K as they fade — recreate the incandescent glow evening service was designed around. Protocol choice, driver compatibility and scene programming justify early dimming and controls coordination; it is far cheaper than replacing drivers after opening.
Maintenance and lamp consistency over time
A dining room specified beautifully at 2500 K can be ruined two years later by a handful of 4000 K replacement lamps bought in an emergency. Hospitality lighting must be specified for its fifth year, not its first night: choose products from stable, long-running ranges, record every source's colour temperature, CRI and beam in a schedule the operations team actually holds, and put attic stock from the same production batches into the handover. Keep drivers accessible without dismantling ceilings, and favour serviceable fittings over sealed disposables in any space where scaffolding is expensive to bring back.

Emergency lighting is a statutory life-safety system, and its design, testing and certification belong to the project's qualified fire and electrical professionals — it is not something a decorative lighting specification can absorb by itself.
